Wow, you don't live in NYC! They were backing trucks up to the ER for the bodies. Isolation was a necessity. Nobody knew how the virus spread, how long it lived, who had it but was not showing symptoms, the pathology of the disease, all not know. The whole response was changing day to day as knowledge was gained, everybody was flying by the seat of their pants. Shutting down the economy in New York City saved a lot of people. We started almost immediately limiting our exposure by distancing, masks and washing hands, sanitizing everything. Better safe than sorry. I am vaccinated, wear a mask indoors in all shopping situation, and still social distance, even outside. We stay within our circles of same friends.
People are free to not mask and not vaccinate. People are free to drive drunk too and society has a right to protect itself from such people, even if my airbags and seat belts are working just fine, just in case you get hit from a different variant.
