It doesn't seem right that something like using any CCR5 inhibitor to treat a cytokine storm or acetylsalicylic acid for headache can be patented. From what I understand, it's a lot tougher to do that in many other countries but the US offers a much broader scope as to what can be patented.
I wouldn't feel comfortable on an ethical level filing an application in an attempt to stake a claim on a potentially life-saving treatment in such a general way but I'm not running a capital-intensive biotech I guess.
