Study Finds Adding Choline Nutrient to Diet May Help Combat Alzheimer’s

A study conducted by researchers from the Arizona State University found that a long-term choline dietary regimen could possibly prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Choline is a nutrient that can be used as a dietary supplement and is found in some foods.

Ramon Velazquez, the study’s lead author, and his fellow researchers at the university’s Neurodegenerative Disease Research Center, investigated whether choline could reduce Alzheimer’s effects. The study, which was carried out in 2019, discovered transgenerational benefits of Alzheimer’s disease-like symptoms in mice whose mothers were given choline.

This study explored the effects of choline in adult mice. The research focused on female mice that had been bred to develop Alzheimer’s-like symptoms, given the prevalence of the ailment in women. The researchers’ findings were reported in the “Aging Cell” journal.

In comparison with mice that received a normal choline regimen, the study results demonstrated that when the mice consumed higher levels of choline in their diet, they showed improvements in spatial memory. Choline protects the brain from Alzheimer’s in the several ways.

First, by decreasing the activation of microglia, which prevents brain inflammation as well as neuronal death which compromises cognitive function, if allowed to occur. A separate report also discovered that choline was a Sigma-1 receptor agonist, which confirms that choline supplements can modify the receptor’s expression, which reduced microglia activation.

Additionally, the nutrient blocks amyloid-beta plaque production, which are a distinguishing feature observed in the ailment’s pathology. It is well known that Alzheimer’s damages the brain even before symptoms begin showing, and by the time symptoms do become evident, the ailment has progressed too far to be reversed. The disease is known to cause loss of motor control and memory loss as well as disorientation.

Estimates indicate that more than 6 million individuals in America are living with Alzheimer’s with projections showing that, in the next 40 years, the ailment may affect at least 14 million individuals. In the same time frame, the costs linked to the management of this ailment are expected to go beyond $20 trillion.

The researchers note that women, in particular, have higher chances of developing this neurodegenerative ailment, adding that including choline in their diet may decrease Alzheimer’s disease pathology. The researchers assert that in comparison with other pharmaceuticals, choline is a safe preventive therapeutic strategy.

Scientists are trying to understand the disease better in order to create more efficacious treatments. The researchers are planning to conduct clinical trials on choline in order to determine whether this nutrient can be utilized as a viable treatment in the near future.

This research is an indication that companies that are operating in the nutraceuticals market targeting heart and brain health, such as Healthy Extracts Inc. (OTCQB: HYEX), may have a big contribution to make in helping people prevent or delay the onset of some of the degenerative diseases afflicting older people.
