(Former statistician US Dept of Commerce). Alaska is at the top and bottom of many statistical profiles. It has the largest ratio of aircraft to people of all the states. There is one aircraft for every 6 persons.
Alaska has a high crime rate for a number of factors. High alcohol use. Long nights, cold weather. isolated cabins, miles from nowhere. High salaries to compensate for the high cost of living. High spousal abuse rate. High divorce rate. High ratio of males to females, makes for a higher rate of sexual assault.

We don’t have so many crimes — numbers wise — what we have is a larger number of crimes than expected for our population. That is due to our relatively younger population, boom-bust economy, and young people with high-paying jobs with few responsibilities who have cash to burn.

Just like anywhere USA there are issues relating to drugs, sex and money. Alaska has really not entirely shook off it’s “Frontier” mentality. Independence and suspicions of government are pretty common attitudes. Ideals and values do not mean the same for everyone and within all of this is the sub-culture that nobody really wants to recognize of drug and alcohol addiction.
So the addict looses his job because of his disease and therefore has to steal to get money to feed the addiction. Then they come across the very real possibility of getting shot or having to shoot first.
We can Blame the darkness of winter or the isolation that may occur but in reality the society itself tends to role back to its frontier mentality which is not afraid of the law because they are constantly overwhelmed and are having to be responsive instead of proactive in deterring crime. They can know about a thing but have to let it play out and pick up the pieces afterward due to resources in many cases.
Then there are the “end of the roaders”. People who run from their totally messed up lives to Alaska, thinking a new start will help them out but what they find is that the same type of people and places that got them into trouble in the first place somewhere else, can be found right here as well.
So while you can look at statistics and see right away that per capita Alaska does have a high crime rate, many of the issues are related to a high percentage of migrating people and or the itinerant work force. We have people from all over coming here to do various types of work and just like anywhere else, they bring big city problems with them, and this includes the Military and their families that are cycled in here all the time for training.
