It's a modern tragedy, isn't it? The checks and balances that once served as safeguards for democracy have checked out and left the building. We can't deny our history has lots of ugliness, as all countries do, but the the foundation needed for correcting those ills always remained intact and strong. Hopefully we can move past poisonous partisanship and other divisive elements to pull together, correct the wayward drift and become a stronger, more just nation for all of us in the future. We've left our heirs a monumental mess.
