"Grover Cleveland, who returned to the White House in 1893 as the only president to serve two terms, was a highly unlikely source of patronage for Greener or other liberal Republicans. A new Jersey native and then a New York resident, he had sidestepped Civil War service by hiring a Polish immigrant to take his place in the Union Army."
The above is from page 118 of "Uncompromising Activist - RICHARD GREENER - First Black Graduate of Harvard College" by Katherine Reynolds Chaddock.
Greener was also the first black faculty member at USC, and considered himself a South Carolinian for the rest of his life because of the experience, as well as the first black diplomat to Russia...... He spoke just a few words of Russian and the Russians around him couldn't speak English so they communicated by speaking French.
This short book of only 206 pages total is interesting from word first to word last and is well worth reading.
