Gravity literally acts like a huge magnet, saying, "no, you shall not fly amigo". The explosions within the rocket's engine persist, exclaiming "yes, I shall fly", because the rocket must fly, must overcome the magnetic gravity's hold. The rocket lifts off, as the distance between the rocket and earth increases, the hold of gravity quickly decreases.
