"A new study of the U.K. and South Africa variants of SARS-CoV-2 — the virus that causes the COVID-19 infection — predicts that current vaccines may not only be less effective at neutralizing these mutant variants... but that reinfections could be more likely!
So, whether you've been inoculated or not — you could still be infected!
The way vaccination works is that the immune system responds and makes antibodies that can neutralize the virus — but antibodies in blood samples taken from people inoculated with the recently developed Moderna or Pfizer vaccine were less effective at neutralizing these two mutated variants, both of which just emerged between September and the end of 2020!
How bad is the news? Against the U.K. variant, the vaccine antibodies were already two times less effective, but against the South Africa variant, efficacy dropped as much as eight times!
And the Johnson & Johnson vaccine? Your odds are only 64 percent against the highly contagious South Africa variant — and that's as long as one of its current 9 mutations doesn't get any stronger or, God forbid, evolve in to an entirely new and powerful one.
But surely new vaccines still in development will be able to handle these variants, right? One such newbie yet to be released, Novavax, is barely 49 percent effective at the South Africa variant.
According to the research director, "Our study and the new clinical trial data show that the virus is traveling in a direction that is causing it to escape from our current vaccines and therapies that are directed against the viral spike."
How can you protect yourself?
Don't shoot the messenger, but it's the same old news...
Lead researcher David Ho, M.D. says, "We have to stop the virus from replicating and that means rolling out vaccine faster and sticking to our mitigation measures like masking and physical distancing."
That means if SARS-CoV-2 continues to mutate — as it's currently doing — we could be on some sort of lockdown for who knows how long!"
