Both I and CTMedic have pointed this out, but Sars2's cousins, MERS and SARS1, were much more deadly.. we've been blessed that mortality so far has been as low as it has. Allowed to survive, the capacity for lethality in SARS2 can absolutely approach those levels (although testing wasn't as widespread and SARS1 and MERS actual lethality may have been lower: 40% in hospitalizations is not far off from what we see in SARS2, but the earlier cousins were a lot more indiscriminate / agnostic to age and comorbidities).
The policies, messaging, and their implementation (or lack of) (especially in relation to nursing homes) leads me to the conclusion that this was the outcome desired by those in charge.. "thin the herd," get the growing social security / Medicare population down to more manageable levels. Absolutely criminal.
All my family and friends are well aware of all of this; they've been educated on why it's critical to keep using masks to lower viral exposure and transmission, avoid public spaces and transportation, closed or recirculated air enviroments, even after vaccination.
