That's a small step in the right direction but still too little, too late IMO. FDA should once and for all get their priorities straight and start looking at a broader picture of enabling Americans to actually start breaking the chain of transmission. At this point, most of us already know that PCR tests due to their own nature are not helpful at breaking the chain of transmission due to several reasons... First, it would take days to find out the results while real positives individuals continue to spread the virus, and when the results do become available, chances are they are no longer infections to others. The second reason I would say, PCR tests are actually really ineffective at identifying individuals with high virus load that are highly infections to others. One could be testing PCR positive for months after initial infection as the individual immune system continues to neutralize the virus genetic material at which point it will no longer be a threat to others. For the goal of keeping people working and the economy moving forward this type of test of positivity for the presence of virus genetic material is the worst economic enemy during these pandemic days, while inexpensive, frequent, rapid at-home (or not) tests can the smartest approach to break the chain of transmission.
