I'd rather that kind of weapon be reserved for the military and not be available to the kind of assholes who misuse it.

Our military isn't going to be using an R-15.

Now WTF does that mean?

Hmmm, let's see if I can break down, "Our military isn't going to be using an R-15.", so even a lunkerheaded librul can understand it. It means, No army dude or dudette will be given an AR-15 to shootie at bad guys.
AR-15’s do not go full automatic. The military uses fully automatic (whether to a 3 shot burst, or some go fully automatic, like a machine gun.) The military does NOT use AR-15’s.
The AR-15 is only semi-automatic. It is not a “machine gun.” The military does NOT use AR-15’s . The AR-15 looks scary, but those are just cosmetic features. Have you ever seen that kid that has a Honda with a big spoiler and loud mufflers, but does 0–60 in 11 seconds. Yeah, that’s all the cosmetic features do. Make it look cool but doesn’t change how it works.
The people who tell you that it is a military weapon are either very ignorant (meaning they really don’t know anything about guns) or are flat out lying to you. Those are the only 2 options. They think it’s OK to lie to you about it, if it will help them get their way and ban them. They are the same people who have already started calling any hunting rifle “Sniper rifles.”
The military does NOT use AR-15’s.
Edit: The above is correct, but to answer the question; The AR was originally designed to be the combat rifle for the Army in the late 50’s, after the design was rejected by the government the design was sold in 1959 to the Colt company and released to civilians. It wasn’t until the mid 60’s when the M16 was adopted.
The ‘16′, up until after Vietnam, was fully automatic, meaning one trigger pull, empty the magazine. But it also had a single round shot setting. After Vietnam, the ‘16’ was redesigned to fire ‘3 rounds' instead of full automatic and the single shot.
Where as, the ‘15’ fires only 1 shot, per trigger pull. That s a HUGE difference.

Instead of just posting an answer, I posted the whole article and the answer to your ridiculous question was in bold print.
