Backlash to GOP coup sweeps papers nationwide, w/ calls for Brooks, Hawley, Cruz, more to resign

Yesterday, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the biggest newspaper in Wisconsin, called on Sen. Ron Johnson two members of the state’s Congressional delegation to resign from their positions, saying that they were “cowardly, and they represent a virulent strain of politics that is an existential threat to democracy.”

Later that day, the Wisconsin State Journal did the same, writing that Johnson “helped lead America to the dark day when violence and tumult stalled our democracy” and called for his resignation.

These papers, in a state that still leans towards progressivism, have been joined by far more conservative papers in far more conservative states, where editorial boards have had it with the terrorism-enablers who they’ve been forced to cover for years.

In Texas, the Houston Chronicle, the third-largest newspaper in the country, just called for Ted Cruz to resign for his role in stoking the insurrection.

“[Cruz] knew exactly what he was doing, what he was risking and who he was inciting as he stood on the Senate floor Wednesday and passionately fed the farce of election fraud even as a seething crowd of believers was being whipped up by President Trump a short distance away,” the editorial board wrote in a piece titled “Resign, Senator Cruz. Your lies cost lives.”

The San Antonio Express-News didn’t even give Cruz the option to end his term himself, demanding that Cruz be expelled. “If we seek a turning point in support of democracy, then those who have damaged it must be sanctioned and repudiated,” the paper’s editorial board said.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Kansas City Star called on Josh Hawley to resign in no uncertain terms in a story with this scathing headline: “Assault on democracy: Sen. Josh Hawley has blood on his hands in Capitol coup attempt.”

Op-ed pieces and letters to editors are popping up all across the country, demanding the removal or resignation of Republicans who stoked the fire and continued to reject the Electoral College.

In Louisiana, a letter to the Baton Rouge Advocate said that “U.S. Sen. John N. Kennedy, R-Madisonville, has proven himself to be a seditious traitor.”

In Alabama, an op-ed writer called on Sen. Tommy Tuberville and Rep. Mo Brooks, among others, to resign immediately. “You have disgraced yourselves, the offices you hold, the State of Alabama and the United States of America,” the writer rages. “In a fair and just world, the stain of this outright attack on American democracy, in which you participated willfully, would hang over you for the rest of your lives.”

In Florida, the Tampa Bay Times didn’t explicitly call for Sen. Rick Scott’s resignation, but the editorial board did say that he “disgraces himself and embarrasses Florida” for voting against the Electoral College even after the terrorist attack.

There are plenty more and I’ll add some of them soon!
