To answer a question you tried to distort: Assuming for argument 10% of deaths occur during days 29-42, 42-day data on 75% of patients should have as many events as 28 days of data on 82.5% of patients.
The DSMC was just offering an alternative way to get to adequate power faster. It wasn't needed.
