You might be right about that kind of consumption. But another kind of greedy consumption -- the kind of greediness that translates into a disinclination to do anything that's even slightly a bother -- is I think a root cause of the vast spread of the pandemic. Maybe we can't all pull together and put aside our own tiny interests. But you remember the line attributed to Ben Franklin during discussion of the Declaration: "we must all hang together, or ... we shall all hang separately." Same goes for the present era of the pandemic.
