Welll...sort of...in the fifties it was no real big deal up in New York as to Black and white and generally with the Germans Italians but do recall my Mom telling me stay out of certain areas up in up state New York. Honestly it is a fact I never listen to my parents and that was how I ended up in this message thread but anyways in second grade we ate in the gym at lunch time and this tall black girl liked me and she would turn her eye lids inside out and that was so cool we were friends from that time on. We had only 1 radio station WBUZ and I would go up and sit with the black radio station announcer while he played different songs and I even got to say hello to the general public once which was cool. He was married of course and My Mom would take us over to there house and eat dinner no big deal. Anyways we would go to the dance on a weekend, the name of the place was called the Grange hall and the same guy who was the radio station announcer would play records. He had twin daughters and again I wasn't contaminated with this colored crap that still exists to this day in our country. For anyone young here and reading this this is like what you would see in the movie no different as the movies where generated from a lot of us yes the motor cycles, the dress, the Fonzie the whole bit. There was even more respect when everyone came to the dance. Anyways I actually only recall dancing with his two girls I mean why not I'm having fun.
In 1960 when we moved down south it was different in a huge way and to make this story short when I want to be accepted in some of these crowds I had to act different that turned my stomach inside out. In time I said this business about driving down to the south side and creating crap between being scared and wondering why I'm with these guys thank GOD my fear won and anytime I was approached I would walk away knowing friendships like that can't be normal but my fear continued until enough time as a man. Fear is good at times but knowing good fear and bad fear is the difference.
