I get carried away sometimes but in this case maybe not. I see the need for ICU beds as the main reason why the world is in this mess. If we can send patients home with supplemental oxygen and some oral meds and clear up the ICUs then the world can get back to normal. I remember when the study using kidney cells came out, I right away thought if we could prevent acute kidney injury, how many patients would go on to get worse and die? If we can prevent the need for dialysis how many patients can be cared for at a lower level of care including out-patient?
When it comes to kidneys and lungs, the damage can lead to long term morbidity and premature death but not so premature that they can’t be discharged and live a few or many, more years. So I’m thinking that If I were an attending physician and I saw significant improvement I’d discharge as soon as possible because there are many more waiting in line. Transfer the burden to the remainder of the health system and take the load off the ICUs.
