“I certainly revered his (Dr. Patterson) opinion

Maraviroc, like all drugs, has side effects, including the elevation of liver enzymes. During the maraviroc trials, 2 women experienced acute liver injury. No acute hepatocellular injury had been noted in a patient sinces it’s approval. See the quotes below from the NIH’s page on maraviroc, updated in June of 2019:
“These elevations (ALT) have not been associated with clinical symptoms and generally did not require dose modification. Nevertheless, two cases of acute hepatocellular injury arose in patients receiving maraviroc in prelicensure clinical trials. There have been no further reports of liver failure attributed to maraviroc therapy.”
Misui was a dermatologist. She has educated herself on leronlimab but has forgotten the many side effects that patients endure in order to have a disease treated. She no doubt prescribed isotretinoin, which is a fantastic medication for acne, but has a myriad of side effects, some severe. My patients who successful complete a regime of isotretinoin accept those side effects, deal with side effects as they appear and are extremely happy when their acne is completely, or nearly, resolved. So if you’re going to discount a doctor for using medication with side effects, well then go after misui as well (don’t actually do that because dermatologists do fantastic work).
Dr. Patterson is conducting a trial on which LH patients are treated with maraviroc for a short period of time (<14 days, if I remember correctly). Him and the others conducting the trial no doubt monitor the patients for side effects, including liver function tests. He based his response on this trial and previous experience. I’m not supporting maraviroc, I’m simply pointing out that side effects are present with nearly every single medication and patients often have to endure this side effects in order to realize the medications benefits. I’ll say this: I see LH patients weekly and I will prescribe them maraviroc if it shows efficacy because I assure you that my LH sufferers would much rather endure a few short term side effects than to continue having headaches, malaise, myalgia, low back pain, depression, etc.
