“Maybe there needs to be more of an emphasis on science in schools because a large percentage of people seem to have no clue.”

Unfortunately, with the rise of social media and social media stars, science has taken a back seat to opinion, political beliefs and generally whatever one wants to believe for their own personal gain. The facts can be proven over and over, but when those facts don’t align with ones established belief system (politics, religion, region, etc), it’s almost a waste of time presenting the facts because they won’t be believed.
