Since HIV was created from SIV Leron should be just as effective on humans as it is on the monkeys. The polio vaccine, while it was being tested, accidentally transferred SIV to West Central African children in the early 50's. Shortly thereafter the first cases of HIV appeared in the same area that the vaccine was tested.
The reason for this is Salk was using local monkey parts in the vaccine so that the human immune system would not reject it. Unfortunately, at some point during the research they used macaque monkeys to create a batch of the vaccine. Up to this point the trials for the polio vaccine had shown much promise. Keep in mind that the U.S. was competing with Russia at that time to be first to market with an effective vaccine, so corners were cut here and there in an attempt to 'win' and be first to market.
Salk would have locals gather monkeys from the neighboring jungles to use their organs for the vaccine (brains and kidneys if I recall). One day the locals could not get enough of the monkeys they had been using, so they were instructed to get whatever they could. They ended up capturing Macaque monkeys. These monkeys were infected with SIV. Once that batch of the vaccine was created and eventually administered to a group of local children, HIV was created.
I find it quite interesting that we are now at the precipice for an HIV cure and we are also rushing another vaccine to market.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the current study with Leronlimab is on Macaque monkeys and it is showing amazingly positive results.
