I'd like to know if the 40,000 volunteers with selected totally randomly, or were there any criteria for acceptance / rejection?
As an analytical chemist, I would say the trials were almost not scientific, because of the massive number of uncontrollable variables involved in the routine behaviors of the volunteers, their health, their attitudes toward the virus being highly contagious. However, I can't imagine how they could have improved the trials. If they isolated the volunteers, that wouldn't work, zero would become infected. They can't force 40,000 people to follow each other around as they go shopping and go to their jobs, etc. The large number in the study does of course improve the validity, but improves the validity from what to what?
