GlobalData’s Influencer Platform recently revealed that batteries are among the top terms tweeted in trending mining industry discussions by influencers on Twitter.
Below are the top five terms tweeted with regard to battery minerals this year.
Batteries
In the third quarter of this year, the launch of a zero-carbon lithium project in Germany, the need for electric vehicles in India and Tesla’s plan to construct a plant for producing batteries were a few of the most discussed topics with 1,501 mentions combined. Lithium and battery expert Dirk Harbecke noted that Tesla announced plans to manufacture its own batteries in Germany. That strategy avoid delivery delays and decreases dependence on Asian battery cell manufacturers.
Another expert in the lithium-ion battery field, Vivas Kumar also highlighted the need for India to change to a battery-storage grid system and begin using electric vehicles. This, said Kumar, would help tackle air pollution in India through the use of clean energy.
Lithium
In the same time frame, the various types of lithium deposits and the development of a battery recycling plant by China’s largest lithium producer were also extensively discussed.
“International Mining” shared an article online that discussed the total number of lithium reserves globally as well as the different types of lithium deposits. The article explained that lithium mined from brine deposits is deemed to be more economically viable. Lithium garnered 750 mentions on the social platform.
Electric vehicles
The worldwide adoption of electric vehicles and electric vehicle producers paying top dollar for lithium were popular subjects in the quarter with more than 580 notes. Harbecke shared another discussion that focused on the use of EVs to substantially decrease air pollution. Two Canadian organizations published research highlighting the fact that more than 300 premature deaths could be averted by replacing SUVs with electric vehicles. Additionally, using electric vehicles helps save $1.82 billion in social costs, according to the same discussion.
Nickel
With 261 notes, an Australian battery minerals project designed to supply cobalt and nickel and Volkswagen’s plans to up the nickel content in its EV battery cells were both commonly discussed topics during the July-through-September quarter. Volkswagen will grow its nickel content in battery cells by 15% next year, bumping it to 80%, revealed nickel enthusiast John Foulkes. The company’s goal is to produce 3 million EVs by 2025.
