"USAF Looks Ahead to Bridge Tanker"
Key Points:
As I have been saying for 2 years, it is now confirmed that the KC-46A will not automatically be ordered for what was the KC-Y legacy tanker replacement program.
The number of KC-46A ordered for what was KC-X (179 aircraft planned) may yet be reduced due to the ongoing issues.
KC-Y will now be considered as the “Bridge Tanker” project between KC-X and a yet to be defined high-tech / stealth / optionally unmanned KC-Z.
The "Bridge Tanker" project will be a “full and open competition” to replace the KC-135 fleet.
The new tanker will be a “non-developmental” program - meaning it will be based on an existing, proven aircraft. This limits the choice to the Airbus A330 MRTT - as used by the RAF and the aircraft the USAF should have got in the first place (again as I have been saying for over 2 years) - and the KC-46A.
Studies of fee-for-service commercial tanking to bolster the military’s capacity are ongoing and will continue.

The main interest for those that were $TMPS shareholders remains the 4 x Tristar tankers and 2 x further Tristar cargo aircraft that were to be used for spares - including the 6 x RB211 engines.
Any already converted former military tanker aircraft - even individual examples let alone a mini-fleet with spares - have a potential value for both USN and USAF contracts - with the actual value depending on the cost analysis by contract bidders. They therefore remain as "asset" for whomever owns them right now.
As I reported earlier, someone has already been buying up at least one RAF VC10 tanker, and available spares and simulators - and negotiations for further examples were believed to be ongoing.
