Papa Roux turns off Big Sodas, offers local craft option

A sign above the cash register at Papa Roux reads, “Free at last, free at last! We are now free from corporate soda bondage!”

The Indianapolis Cajun-joint kicked corporate America to the curb today, replacing Pepsi products with locally-made craft concoctions at its 10th and Post Road location.

The soda, made by craft beverage-maker Jerry Rezny of Handcrafted Beverages , follows in the foot-steps of a significant increase in local breweries and artisan cocktail syrup maker Wilks and Wilson .

“Brewpubs have shown that people want quality, locally produced beverages,” said Rezny.

Does a fancier soda mean an increase in prices?

“It’s costing us more on the back-end but soda prices will remain the same for customers,” said Art Bouvier who co-owns the restaurant with his wife, Colleen.

The handcrafted sodas are $2, with free refills for dine-in customers and as always, fresh brewed tea is free (dine-in only).

The menu offers eight flavors: Red Creme, Cherry Vanilla Creme Cola, Olde Timey Root Beer, Lemon-Limey Soda, Sweet Ginger Beer, Classic Cola, and Low Sugar Cola, and is made with 100% cane sugar. The ‘Low Sugar’ option contains the natural herb sweetener, Stevia, and light cane sugar, ringing in at 50 calories.
