Frankly, IMO, you have no idea about his motivations. Maybe you are right. Maybe you are wrong. You (and others?) "think" you have it figured out. You are entitled to your opinion. Circumstances sometimes change after one expresses intent. Sometimes one is not in control of all the factors. I try to be careful about impuning a person's character without proof. I don't want the same recklessness returned to me. But maybe that's just me.
