They only thing that makes partial sense (and I hope this is their reasoning) is they wanted to get the feedback incase they had to tune the enrollments.
Having said that, running the trial would still make sense. If it is working as we believe the early data shows etc, then it is also a humane thing to do.
I am assuming if you could get the trial to greater than 390 ie 410 or so - you allow for some margin of error. Also with a higher N, you could filter out the C's and look at the S' cohort by it self.
