I remembered that Fleming was working in a lab where the windows were open -- largely because the influence of the influenza pandemic, which made millions of people open their windows. And a little trace of bread mold floated through the window and landed right on his slide, where he was looking at bacteria. He thought, damn, the slide is ruined, but then he displayed the hallmark of a true scientist: he kept looking at the slide. And noticed that the mold was rapidly destroying the bacteria on contact. And so it began.
