The answer is that the nations I noted (SWE, GER, DEN, NOR, FIN) are similar genetically, in social cohesion metrics (willingness to do what the government wants), in health metrics (obesity), in health care systems, and, most importantly, in when the pandemic arrived in the country.
France, Spain and Italy were early. Only France among those has a comparable health care system to north Europe. And the UK suffered hugely (!) from the same hubris as the US. That's the bulk of rest of the EU population.
