But if I were to say "I've heard BP's paper is going to be published soon" I bet that wouldn't be deleted.
Exactly (and that pertains not only to long "rumours", but also to all kind of opinions that are factually inaccurate).
Which is why, unless the poster is a known basher, shorter or someone with multiple aliases spamming the board/throwing in insults, it is quite inconsequential to delete it.
Free speech is a high good and pertains to both sides (even the side one doesn't like). If you "fact-check" and delete Trump's tweets, you'd also need to delete a whole lot of the things Bernie Sanders, AOC and Ilhan Omar tweet every day, because they too post a lot of bullshit...
It is a general problem: this board is for long investors. At the same time, it isn't for pumpers and should invite to an open and critical discussion. So, crying "SHORT!" "MOLE!" "SELL YOUR SHARES!" even when a poster puts out arguments or points out issues in an at least half-intelligent way, won't help the board, either... (#confirmationbias)
Regarding this particular matter regarding BP's paper, I don't think it will be productive to continue this discussion, unless ClosetInvestor or gbonation (and others!), are willing to share their sources (or perhaps blackened correspondence) to at least one mod here, which they likely can't do.
My personal opinion is that hearing about these "rumours" from several people whose identity I know and who are reliable, and in combination with NP's elusive behaviour on the interview, something definitely is up here. I've known ClosetInvestor from this board and iHub for several years, trust him and am convinced he wouldn't post this here recklessly if it was unsubstantiated.
And there is always the option to ask BP (and NP) and his circle about this topic oneself...
All my opinion...
