PODXL decreases cell adhesion under certain conditions and increases the migratory ability of cancer cells by inducing a epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). In main tumors it would aid in keeping cancer cells from being attacked by blocking adhesion and of course increasing metastasis through (EMT).
