This NYT college report that was put out last week is misleading at best. Clearly written with an agenda, the report fails to reveal that the COVID deaths in the reported study are from the spring when the world was scrambling to figure out what to do- before social distancing, quarantining, masks, etc. Since reopening last month, there have been 50,000 cases and 1 reported hospitalization among the students.
With two kids in college right now- on campus and going to about 50% of the classes- I can tell you that it is a different world for them. One had it and had minimal symptoms for 3 days- quarantined a week, and is back to normal. The infections aren't taking place in the classroom, they're taking place during the other 20 hours a day for 20 yr old kids. The worst thing we could have done for case counting is to reveal the data that kids just aren't getting very sick. However, that may end up being the best thing as COVID runs through the student populations and helps them develop herd immunity much sooner than the rest of the country.
