It is amusing/frustrating to me to see these authors dismiss cytokines in Covid.
Patterson demonstrates elevated cytokine levels, and it is the pattern of dysfunction not just elevated levels that are important.
Just like diabetics with elevated blood sugar levels, the numbers alone do not tell the whole picture. Some poorly managed diabetics walks around daily with blood glucose levels well over 300, while others can spike to the 300s, end up with ketoacidosis and in the ICU.
IMO, the issue is whether the cytokines are elevated as a result of an insult (MI, trauma, etc) or part of a dysfunctional response due to a failed or delayed immune response, as in Covid 19.
Patterson, beyond measuring cytokines, demonstrated that blocking CCR5:
1.Reduced levels of downstream cytokines (Il-6,TNF-alpha).
2. Reduced literally thousands of RNA transcriptions vs control patients
3. Normalized CD4/CD8 ratios
4.Reduced viremia to near zero
Oh, also made these patients clinically better and many off EVMO and vents.
I will go out on a limb and suggest that the authors did not investigate or give credit to Dr. Patterson’s findings.
We, of course, have a different conclusion from the available evidence.
