Unless you give that protection away, so that, a biomed cancer research company can use your data to find a cure for your cancer, or participate in a study. Those a legitimate medical reasons you might want to share your medical data. But sharing your data so that it can be used for marketing is what HIPPA is designed to prevent.
So, you are protected from having your medical and personal data shared unless and until you give your permission. Aggregated data does not give away your personal or medical data.
Regarding personal data, the Devil is in the fine print. Facebook is really a marketing company with revenue from sharing your personal data for all advertising purposes.
