VanGogh died a complete unknown - as did his former roomate Paul Gaugin - both are now considered top 5 all-time Impressionist painters.
More historical trivia from that era:
Hitler, Stalin, Trotsky and Freud all lived in Vienna in 1913 and all frequented the same coffee house (at the time all were all un-known's).
The owner of the Coffee shop remebers days when Hitler,Stalin and Trotsky were there at the same time. Stalin was seen making fun of a man with a huge chocolate bar, mocking him while Trotsky laughed. The man with the chocolate bar was Adolf Hitler.
