everything we know... I was talking about docto

I was talking about doctors.
About public funding of research. A good buddy of mine was Robert Clarkson, RIP. He was a professor at the U of I at Urbana. He held three chairs... medicine, vet med, and physical chemistry.
One night we were talking about grants... because if you don't have grants you don't have love at the big U. He made the following point:
paraphrased:
True researchers don't use grants to discover the truth... Grants are used to make what is known to be true available to the public domain.
The other route that knowledge can flow is into the private sector... privately.
At that level a grant application is a question ... "Do you want this or should I sell it somewhere else?"
I am sure that it isn't always this way, but if you are important in your area, it is likely that it is somewhat true for you.
It's probably more important and certainly as large in scope.
