A systematic takeover of the media - 90% of all US media is owned by 5 or 6 monopolies - allowing them to control the narrative and topics for discussion is where it starts. They protect their advertisers (revenue source) and that's why there's no legit discussion of universal health care or why we're the only democracy without it. All major sectors of the economy have been monopolized by big money, from banking, to war, prison, education, the FDA, police, health care, etc; even the elections are driven by vast sums of money and the people's choices who do NOT serve the plutocracy never get a fair shake in the controlled media. So we have two corrupt parties both sold out to the highest bidder, serving the elite and big money at the expense of our democracy and the good of the people. Reagan put the democratization on steroids during his dark eight years, with a primary focus on reducing regulations on business and banking, allowing more corruption and domination of the richest. A concerted effort to kill unions kept wages stagnated until people were forced to work multiple jobs to survive, an attack not only to increase corporate profits, but eliminate much of the "leisure time" people had to follow politics closely and organize protests. They learned that during the golden years of New Deal politics when we had time to protest the Vietnam War, civil rights, gender equality, the environment, etc. So now we don't have time to protest endless, pointless, expensive war games, or other corruption, and the corporate owned media won't call them out like they did during Vietnam, and so the evil of imperialist war persist. It goes so deep on so many levels I could go on for hours ... this is more like a reader's digest version touching on only a few important points that has led to our demise.
