That contest seems to be team oriented to get people working together on an open sourced solution, so patented approaches would not be the focus. Everything I read was aimed at diverse teams working on a common solution ... look at the timeline ... focused on building teams.
I think NNLX is beyond that. Bret was adamant about not letting this current crisis derail the long-term effort. In my view he did his civic duty and provided an avenue for the product to be developed, but is not going to let the product consume the company. If no one else wants to pick up the ball and run with it, it will be the world's loss.
