Cdiddy, you are absolutely correct. If the drug under trial has serious adverse effect, the trail can be stopped. I dont know how they can tell if the drug has serious adverse effect in the middle of the trial, they may have looked at the ongoing trail mortality rate and compares that with the placebo's death rate. If the trial death rate is higher than that of placebo then something is definitely going wrong and the trial may be stopped. But in this case, what has happened? Instead of stopping the trail, the patient number has been increased to 130. Putting those two together means only one thing and can we guess what this one thing is. Please dont ask if this is moral or not. Hopefully, one day a memorial park will be built for all unsung heroes that have risked their lives to save ours.
