Just published in the journal Nature on the unique, in-depth, serial assessment of >2,300 people in a town in Italy for #SARSCoV2.

Besides suppression of the outbreak, it is highly instructive that 42% were asymptomatic infections, & differentiated from presymptomatic. This corroborates results of other recent studies
Of note here is that the viral load – or the amount of virus per unit of sample – of the people without symptoms was very similar to those with symptoms.
A viral culture would have been nice to include to show whether the viral load in asymptomatic, pre-symptomatic and symptomatic are actually due to viable infectious virus or not. My guess is somehow asymptomatics have less viable virus compared to others.
It established, in a limited number of people, that asymptomatic carriers of #SARSCoV2 could infect other individuals. The frequency of this transmission is not known, but is likely is low. Which may be the reason why Sunday's NYT front page was so apropos and why wearing a mask is essential
