With Etrade, after you establish an account and set up an ACH link to your bank account, you can make no cost transfers of funds from your bank account to Etrade.
The ACH transfer of funds is immediate (as Etrade credits you the amount of the transfer to your Etrade account before they deduct it from your bank account). The ACH transfer is instantaneous, and allows you to purchase stocks, etc. immediately.
As far as I know, the amount that you can transfer by ACH is limited to the value of your Etrade account. Obviously you have to make sure that you have the funds in your bank account first (before you make the transfer).
The transfer amount is usually debited from your bank account the next day.
Note: This post is about how to purchase securities quickly. If you want to transfer any (of the transferred money) from Etrade back to your bank account, it usually takes 3 days.
