"Longer-term objectives include potentially performing additional research to develop Brilacidin as a broad-spectrum antiviral, with possible application beyond coronaviruses, e.g., treating other viruses, such as encephalitic alphaviruses and filoviruses."
I looked up encephalitic alphaviruses and this would include inflammation of the brain. Most people know about encephalitis and, like coronavirus, most who contract it have only mild flu-like symptoms, but for those with severe cases it can cause life-changing mental problems or death. I also looked up alphaviruses and these again are related to inflammation of the brain. The article I read said that many medical personnel believe that quite a number of patients in mental wards could simply be suffering from alphavirus which changes the way a person thinks. Would be wonderful to allow this group of people a chance to live a normal life.
I looked up filoviruses and found the most well-known one was Ebola. Filoviruses are usually transmitted via butchered animals having the virus. They are among the most deadly branch of viruses known since many times the death rate is over 90%. The other major virus in this category is MARV, short for Marburg virus. Maybe not a major problem for the USA, but could be a game changer for Africa or other 3rd world areas.
