Yes, I agree with you in that if there where patients in ventilators still when the study was terminated, and those patients had been there for long time, chances are that they would had survived with highest probability skewing the results eventually. However, also, possibly there were also patients just intubated with a more possible negative outcome.
We will not know what would had happened eventually apart from incorporating more data at a latter time
I believe that authors analyzed the data for 2634 patients that had been discharged or died. They did not mention (or tried to) outcomes for those still hospitalized.
