there were government price limits on all consumables ...however there was no such thing as globalization.
and most everything was made in America.
New 3 bedroom home with 2 car garage on 1/4 acre was 39-49K depending on additional items in 77-82. Same house today costs 259K in my home town.
I bought a used trailer for $400 and sit it on a corner of my then mother and father-in laws farm, put in a well and septic. Total cost $2000. Paid cash, no payments. No internet or cable rabbit ears 3 channels. Lived close to a hydroelectric plant so utilities including LP and phone were under $100 a month. Butchered/plus family hunted, had chickens and eggs. So there wasn't much needed at the grocery store. Gas I used was a write off.
So then wife and I. Lived pretty well on $250 a month. She made $3.10 at the Blue Cheese Factor in town and I ran the station. Then things started to go to sh_t. By the time Reagan was elected. He had a mess to fix. 1981 was the big nasty for us. Factory was closed and sold, tanks at my station leaked. Bagged it and tagged it in 1982. Wasn't until Reagan 2nd term things started to turn.
However small town American was lost during Carter. If I had to put a date on it late 1979. Iran Hostage crisis. Cost went up, massive layoffs and closings, Interest throw the roof.
