And due to the nature of all of the mechanical and pharmaceutical support he's been on, a full cascade of events has taken place, including the result of him losing his leg (possibly caused by the high levels of vasopressor support, being immobile and on and off anticoagulation, and/or mechanical obstruction caused by cannulation of femoral blood vessels) There is so much that happens when someone is in critical condition for this long of a period, each day brings new challenges that are the result of the treatments being used to support life. It's very difficult, and often these patients, if they survive, come out of the hospital with permanent physical changes/limitations as a result of those life-saving measures.
The initial disease process may be the catalyst, but the cascade of events it sets in motion, is often the most challenging part of it all...
I've seen it so many times... I hope he makes it back to his family and life.
