Azithromycin (Zpak), as with all macrolides, has an immunomodulatory effect. This drug class includes clarithromycin and erythromycin. ZPak also stays in the system longer allowing less frequent dosing. Tetracycline and Doxyclycline also have these effects.
This is why they are also commonly used in skin conditions such as rosacea and acne in addition to anti-bacterial effects.
HCQ also has an immunomodulatory effect and antiviral activity in vitro against coronavirus and may be the rationale for the combination. Maybe Doxyclycline is safer to combine with HCQ. Again HCQ is very different from Chloroquine (CQ) and Rita Wilson is a fool for taking CQ. She does not know what she is talking about.
I would be good to show actual study data form US patients here. It has been a few weeks, where is it? The problem is that mild patients may not volunteer since they will likely get better on their own and do not want to be quarantined by testing positive before going into a study. Who knows?
