Medium.com is a social publishing plateform. Amateurs, pros, bloggers... it's basically open to all kind of writers. In general medium articles must hence be shared on other platforms (social networks...) in order to reach an audience. If some famous person writes one and shares on Twitter, it can be seen by millions. If I were to write one, I might get a few views if some keywords make it happen in someone else's search
