It because the virus is not containable, only mitigable.
Precisely, the mitigation actions is what we should have implemented rapidly. I am not going to go into the flattening of the curve that, I am sure, everybody here understands.

Very infectious, 80% are asymptomatic, majority of the rest have mild disease. 80% of people may test negative even though exposed based on Diamond Princess as a closely contained prospective experimental group. This is not hard to understand.
Not at all, we all understand this.

In such a situation, testing does not help unless you mandate testing 330 million people twice a week, every week. Good luck with that.
I was not referring particularly to testing but, since you brought it up, testing does help . Even if not everybody is tested.

Google testing and Pandemic control … many articles on the subject
"When a communicable disease outbreak begins, the ideal response is for public health officials to begin testing for it early.
That leads to quick identification of cases, quick treatment for those people and immediate isolation to prevent spread. Early testing also helps to identify anyone who came into contact with infected people so they too can be quickly treated."

We still need 60k more dead before we hit the number of dead from the 2017-2018 flu epidemic--80k dead there. Look it up.
The way I see it, regardless of how many died or will die, one extra death is one too many. We don't need any more deaths and should do anything that we can to make this numbers as low as possible.

The only option was to shut the entire border down and the economy entirely back in January. The long-term consequences of that are also potentially dangerous. That is why it is not so simple.
Well, that was done anyway (both in border terms, traveling and economic terms)!!. And worse, when it was too late. Many countries in the world are doing it. We have restrictions with Canada (March 18) and with Mexico (March 20) and traveling restrictions with several countries
