Cannizzaro was in the ICU for 17 days. His lungs were filled with fluid so he could not breathe. On Thursday he took the drug and by Sunday he almost felt like his old self. Yes, some could say that's a coincidence, but the probability is very small that the drug has no effect in saving his life, in my opinion.
FDA's approval for emergency use is also based on anecdotal cases of critically ill patients. If the cases are mild patients who stay at home, there's no need to approve it for emergency use, in my opinion.

Again, larger controlled trials are needed to prove its efficacy and whether benefit outweighs risk.
