Trump touting that this is a miracle drug with no side effects is at best irresponsible and at worst dangerous. I have several friends who take it for things like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis to keep flares down, and they tell me is carries a number of risks that they have to monitor closely. And his actions have made it nearly impossible for them to get refills because of the new demand.
Some people’s brains can only grasp direct causation.
For example, “Patients with COVID-19 might benefit from hydroxychloroquine so we should give it to them and stop so much regulation.”
Other people can grasp systemic causation.
For example, “Patients with COVID-19 might benefit from hydroxychloroquine, but there’s only a finite amount right now. So if we let anyone with symptoms have it, that could seriously impact supply. If we impact the supply, then people who suffer from serious medical conditions, which it’s been proven to help, may not be able to acquire the drug. So those people will suffer when it would definitely help them, all because people who *might* benefit have used it all.”
