There are some of the smartest people in world working on developing a treatment for COVID-19. As IPIX investors we are getting very valuable scientific testing and visibility on Brilacidin for free. It is possible that Brilacidin may play a part in COVID-19 treatment. It is also probable that the U.S. government has learned a very hard lesson in our country’s dependency on China and that this current pandemic may not be a singular event. My simplified view of COVID-19 is that it has 2 primary characteristics:

1) It is a highly contagious virus that exponentially replicates within the human body that targets the respiratory system.

2) It triggers an intense inflammatory response from our immune system that can cause a cytokine storm.

Brilacidin has proven through several FDA trials to solve #2 above which is the major cause of related COVID-19 fatalities. This feature alone could make Brilacidin a key drug for future treatments and a very valuable asset. Testing is currently taking place for #1 above which is to limit the overall viral load. If this testing is successful, Brilacidin could be a total solution for this pandemic and possibly as a baseline defense against future viral and bacterial pandemics as well as other potential biochemical weapons. Brilacidin significantly reduces the likelihood of drug resistance developing vs current antibiotic offerings on the market. This is a huge advantage in the war against this pandemic and future threats of biochemical weapons. Most importantly Brilacidin has been proven to be SAFE without the side effects of other anti-inflammatory drugs.

The current emergency treatment is to use hydroxychloroquine which hopefully addresses #1 above (viral load issue). This drug has been approved for use against malaria and lupus but has potential adverse reactions. Chloroquine Is a Zinc Ionophore (a substance which is able to transport particular ions across a lipid membrane in a cell.) There are some people that believe zinc could play a key role in a combination treatment. See the below chart for some interesting symptoms of zinc deficiency compared to COVID-19 symptoms. The other drug being used in combination with hydroxychloroquine is the antibiotic Azithromycin (Z-Pak) which is being used in the attempt to address #2 issue of intense inflammation according to Dr. Deborah Birx. Some severe side effects of Z-Pak include QT prolongation (heart muscle takes longer than normal to recharge between beats), cardiac arrhythmia and other heart related issues. “[3-12-2013] The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning the public that azithromycin (Zithromax or Zmax) can cause abnormal changes in the electrical activity of the heart that may lead to a potentially fatal irregular heart rhythm. Patients at particular risk for developing this condition include those with known risk factors such as existing QT interval prolongation, low blood levels of potassium or magnesium, a slower than normal heart rate, or use of certain drugs used to treat abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias.”

Additional information on cytokine storm:

With any infection, the body’s immune system responds by attacking the foreign virus or bacteria. While this immune response can rid the body of the infection, it can also sometimes cause collateral damage in the body.

This can come in the form of an intense inflammatory response, sometimes called a “cytokine storm.” The immune cells produce cytokines to fight infection, but if too many are released, it can cause problems in the body.

“A lot of [the damage in the body during COVID-19] is due to what we would call a sepsis syndrome, which is due to complex immune reactions,” Evans said. “The infection itself can generate an intense inflammatory response in the body that can affect the function of multiple organ systems.”

Zinc inhibits coronavirus RNA polymerase enzyme activity, the very methodology by which coronavirus infection is confirmed in the laboratory.

But be careful. More than 150mg/day of zinc may lead to zinc toxicity, with side effects including reduced immune function, according to the NIH.
