Studies have shown that masks stop the spread of viruses both by protecting those who wear them from inhaling most of the tiny mucus- or saliva-plus-virus particles that people emit when coughing or breathing out, and by protecting others from such particles that YOU may breathe out, having been infected and contagious but not yet showing symptoms.
They also say that you can make an effective mask with something as simple as a couple layers of t-shirt material that you can cut and fold.
